Newfoundlanders and Labradorians For Shootfighting (MMA) in Newfoundland sign now

The people of Newfoundland and Labrador want to see Shootfighting (Mixed Martial Arts - MMA) sanctioned in Newfoundland. The term "illegal" has been trown out there but is a harsh word, MMA is only not sanctionable and any prize fight that is not sanctioned by a governing body is not a llowed. Bellow is a copy of the letter, written by Newfoundland and Labrador Amateur Wrestling Association (NLAWA), to the Department of Culture, Tourism and Recreation in hopes that they would approve and forward to cabinet. There has been a slight ammendment to the current existing "Boxing Authority Act" and "Boxing Authority Regulations" to include combative sports including "Shootfighting" to the list of sanctionable sports of the Boxing Authority. There has been many scepulations about MMA but they only come from uneducated individuals. The Government claims that on Quebec sanctions MMA in the Country, but proof exists that MMA is also sanctioned in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Alberta and British Columbia (not sure about Sasketchewan or Manitoba). Please let the Newfoundland and Labrador Government know that you want to see this happen by signing bellow. Thank you for your support.

"It is the formal intentions of Newfoundland Labrador Amateur Wrestling Association, hereby named NLAWA, to take over where Boxing Newfoundland Labrador left off. It is our goal not to just replace them however, but broaden the scope of the Boxing Commissions range, and be host to a wide range of professional fights. As it stands now, anyone who trains in any type of martial art, other than kickboxing, from Newfoundland must go away to train and fight. As a result, when a Newfoundlander or Labradorian has a professional fight, he or she is not recognized as fighting for our province, they are recognized as fighting for the province in which they train.
In conjunction with this, it is also the goal of the NLAWA to stimulate the economy, and bring revenues to this province which it has never experienced before. The immediate financial gains would be felt by the athletes, managers, and promoters, but many others would greatly benefit from this adventure. The venues of the combat sports contests would greatly profit, the beer and liqour companies would have increased sales, hotels would have filled rooms, and of course the province would benefit directly from all of this in the form of taxes. As a result, there is much potential benefit for this province, but none of this can be achieved as of now due to the inactivity of the Boxing Commission.
It is furthermore the goal of the NLAWA to ensure the safety of those participating in a combat sport fighting contest. We recognize the need for proper medical procedures, and proper refereeing credentials to ensure the health and safety of the athletes. It is our goal to give those who may not otherwise get a chance to showcase their wide variety of talents, a safe and respectable environment to do it in. As a result, we will be issuing and enforcing a variety of licensing agreements between the Boxing Commission including, but not limited to: fighters, managers, and promoters. But as it stands now, none of this may happen.
This is due to the inactivity of the Boxing Commission, and its inability to play host to any combat sport contest. As re-defined in Section 2, Sub-Section 2 of the Boxing Authority Act, a combat sport is to be defined as, a sport involving full body contact between contestants in which a contestant uses a fist, whether open or closed, or a weapon held in a fist, and includes but is not limited to the following martial arts: shootfighting; karate; tae kwon do; jujitsu. As also re-defined in Section 2, Sub-Section 3 of the Act, a combat sport is boxing, eliminating the need to re-write the whole act.
The Boxing commission will consist of those which are described in Section 3, Sub-Sections 3 and 4 in the Boxing Authority Act including an executive, a commissioner, and a vice-commissioner. They are: Composed of not less than 6, and not more than 9 members appointed appointed by the minister as follows: the President of the NLAWA; a chief official; a secretary/treasurer; a technical director; a medical doctor; and those other persons with financial, legal or other expertise as may be required. It is the formal request of the NLAWA, that the following people be appointed to those positions: Peter Petipas - Commissioner; Jason Quilty - Vice-Commissioner; Randy Ralph - President; . " (As well they have obtained a medical doctor)
