Sub: Need of justice for the Adivasi killed in Assam for demanding ST status.

Dear Esteemed Prime Minister,

We are bringing to your notice the issue of brutal killing to Adivasi in Assam, who were asking for their democratic right.

On 24th November 2007, demanding the ST status, around 5000 people took a rally organized by All Adivasi Students' Association, Assam in the street of Gowahati. However it was publicized to outside world by the media and the state government such that these people demanded the bloody war and death which caused loss of more than 20 lives and 200 people injured.

The Adivasi who demanded for ST status in Assam are real Adivasi of this country. Their relatives and sibling living in Jharkhand, Bihar, West Bengal and Orissa are recognized as ST by government of respective state. Around a century ago these people have migrated to Assam on search of job in Tea garden. Gradually they became permanent residents of that area. By moving from one place to other, does an Adivasi loose his identity even inside our country?

Media reports that Adivasi have initially damaged the property on street side shops and running vehicles. Then the property owners chased them to such war. This rally was intended for a peaceful rally along with several women members. Have you ever seen anyone asking for fight when accompanied with ladies? Being with women members how can they ask for fight? Some sort of stone throwing have been done by Adivasi when the police didn't allow them to march ahead towards Assembly Bhavan. How ever the damage was not that intensive as reported by media i.e. damage of 60 vehicles. The question arises why the voice of Adivasi are not heard at the first instance? It has been always observed that neither the administrators nor the police ready to accept the even small request/demand done by poor and marginalized people like Adivasi and Dalits. Similar incident triggered anger to them and they did some sort of damage to the vehicles on the street.

The fact is that this is a preplanned attack by local non-adivasi in an organized way. Can you believe without proper plan does any group have courage to fight with a rally of 5000 people? Without proper plan can you call so many people to street to fight within 1-2 hours? This was a well planned agenda of the pro-quota people to attack the rally and teach them a lesson. Peaceful rally maker didn't have a single weapon since it was intended for just a rally and not a strike as it used to be for others. If someone has destroyed someone's property, do you think it can temper him to beat one till death. In fact this is highly unimaginative when it happened to thousands of Adivasi out of which around 250 were hospitalized and finally 22 died.

From live show telecasted by different national channels, one can't imagine how can people beat others so merciless. It was telecasted in Ajtak and Star News, group of 30-40 people trap 5-6 Adivasi and beat them by sticks and kick, slap them till they loose sense. The similar incident was repeated through out the city. Can you believe two women had hidden on a bush to save their live and someone comes with a bamboo stick and hits them miserably (shown in NDTV)? Can you believe an women was stripped on middle of the road and she runs to save her live without single cloth on her body (shown in Ajtak)? Do you think all these were possible just because someone damages their property by a stone's throw? Do you think these non-adivasi people who came forward to fight, were all victims of damaged property? This attack was not for retaliation of any damage to their property, it was attack to the people asking ST status. It was the clear sign of suppression that the upper caste used to mount on Adivasi.

Police on duty gave explanation that they were very less in number and couldn't control the local people. How ever none stopped them to inform to the police head quarter hinting for such bigger massacre. The whole battle continued for 3-4 hours and it is enough to control the whole situation if it would have been wanted by police. Media gave explanation that it was not informed for rally and was informed only for a meeting. When the police on duty could see that they have started a rally, why could not they informed to their head quarter for further police assistance? Police remain silent spectators and supported the locals to chase them to death. The TV channels have showed all these incidents on live.

The fact is that it is not an attack on any single issue of poor and marginalized people. This became a trend in India and every where you can find people attacking the tribals and dalits as if they don't have rights on this land. There are many such incidents and an other example was the Kalinga Nagar massacre against TATA project in Orissa during last year. Media also shows hesitation to support poor tirbals and gives a biased cover up to the actual story. Anyone can conclude from the brutality and merciless attitude shown by upper caste people, police and government machinery that tribals are not treated as human. Their lives are as cheap as lives of cats and dogs. No one care to listen their worries, no one bother about their problems, and when they try to pull attention of government, this type of brutality can be the consequence.

Sir, we want your government to take action against such incident. There should be a proper investigation by CBI and need to be find out the truth behind this. We want the culprits to be punished; punished to such an extent that the rest should learn what happens when one takes such action against normal people, the adivasi. We want you to frame policy that will ensure the lives of poor and marginalized people when their demand clashes with interest of rich and powerful people. Unless this is ensured by the government of India, the democracy in India is certainly to die soon.
