National Medal for Australian Customs Officers sign now

Dear Prime Minister,

We the family, friends, associates and supporters of Customs officers around Australia and overseas petition you to deliver to the men and women of the Australian Customs Service recognition of there ongoing service to this country. Allow them to be recognised by awarding them the National Medal in line with all of the other Police and Defence personal they work hand in hand with daily protecting the Australian community and lifestyle from threats to our borders.

Sir, currently they are recognised by the awarding of a 1cm x 1.5cm lapel pin with the Customs logo and a number indicating the years of service. This is exactly what was awarded staff in Qantas when it was a government entity some 40 yrs ago and is no longer in keeping with modern standards. Unfortunately most officers that receive this award throw them out or toss them in a draw; they are rarely worn proudly on the uniform or displayed prominently around the home.

The honour of service in Customs has been lost to the officers and to those that need to know the officers are proud of the job they do, the people of Australia whom they protect.

The executive of Customs is resistant to the adoption of the National Medal or the establishment of an Australian Customs Medal for officers stating that officers do not fit the criterion of placing there lives in danger for property or people in the course of there duties and that the current in-house system is adequate. They say this and at the same time arm officers for personal protection so that 1/3 of staff carry handguns, batons & capsicum spray exactly as Police for the same reasons as to why they carry them. There is obviously inequity and a diminishing value of the jobs Customs officers do.

Sir, Customs officers are in danger every day they go off to work, they may be assaulted, exposed to drugs, exposed to biological weapons, exposed to radiological weapons, stabbed or shot and have a much higher chance of injury then an average worker going off to there job. Most Customs officers work like Police and active Defence personnel and in similar areas so please treat them with respect and honour and recognise there service by awarding them the National Medal, I also ask you consider establishing an Australian Customs Medal in recognition of outstanding individuals and groups within the service as current rewards and recognition are not adequate.
