National Hockey League Officiating Petition sign now

Dear National Hockey League;

This petition is regarding the inconsistent refereeing that the fans witnessed and endured during the regular season game between the Ottawa Senators and the Toronto Maple Leafs on October 10, 2005.

The fans were promised a new product in the new NHL. And that we would witness increased calls for obstruction and interference to help remove the clutching and grabbing from the game to showcase the players talent.

The referees were not only inconsistent from one period to the next, with players having to adjust to a different set of rules each period, but even in a span of five minutes in a period, the grounds for a penalty had changed.

The fans were not only promised that these new calls would be tougher and consistent, but that the officials would not use penalties to even up the game. This is also something that the fans did not witness in this game. Whenever one of the two teams had the lead, a very weak penalty was then called as if it were an attempt to make up for previous mistakes that had shifted the momentum between the two teams.

On top of all these promises, the fans were also guaranteed that we would see the same infractions called throughout preseason, the regular season, and into the playoffs. Many fans doubted that this would actually happen, but were hoping that they would be proven wrong. Unfortunately all it took for them to be proven right was the third regular season game between the Ottawa Senators and the Toronto Maple Leafs.

We, as fans are hoping that in receipt of this petition, the NHL will make a public statement addressing the issue of officiating in this game, and make a public apology to all hockey fans that the NHL did not meet their own promises to the fans.

Sincerely,

All Hockey Fans Undersigned.
