Nandigram Massacre: March 14th, 2007 sign now

We are writing this to register our strongest protest against what has happened in Nandigram on 14th March 2007. We think that it is a shameful day in the history of West Bengal.

We believe that debates, discussions and dialogues between different stake-holders could have resolved the land acquisition dispute in Nandigram. However, on the pretext of conflict resolution and restoration of normalcy, the violence in Nandigram by the administration and miscreants have angered and humiliated the people of West Bengal. We deeply mourn for all those who are dead and we wish speedy recovery of all who are injured.

We are also apprehensive about the fact that various destabilizing forces will use this tense and unstable scenario to foment more trouble and obstruct return of peace in Nandigram. This in turn will damage the prospects of agricultural growth and industrialization, both of which are crucial for resurgence of West Bengal as an economically strong and robust state.

As a group of people committed to uphold the democratic and peaceful tradition of the people of West Bengal, we urge you to immediately take steps such that:

1. Officials of the Police and the Administration as well as the armed force responsible for the incident are identified and punished as soon as possible

2. People spreading unsubstantiated rumours in the name of political movement across the villages of West Bengal, burning party offices and making the families of party workers and supporters homeless, are identified and dealt with strongly.

3. Use of provocative, irresponsible and indecent language by Mr. Binoy Kongar, Ms. Mahasweta Devi and Janab Kabir Suman over this issue should better be restrained and civilized.

4. The State Government should initiate participative political process to inform any crucial decisions instead of solely relying on administrative inputs.

Let there be peaceful and constructive discussions, debates and dialogues instead of everlasting confrontation. We call all the sensitive and democratic people of West Bengal to protest in unison against the state-sponsored terrorism and the senseless anarchy of the opposition.
