Nader Must Go sign now

First, you should know that mine is not a mission to unseat you from the political battlefield. I am a dyed-in-the-wool Democrat, and someone who proudly proclaims himself a liberal, despite that monikers dirty undertones these days. I believe that you, and others like youHoward Dean, to name oneare an important part of my partys development. You have exposed the Democratic system that has steadily edged-out the progressive voice. Undeniably, the party has closed ranks behind centrists and straight-liners so that one almost forgets that elephants and donkeys are two different animals. And while the Democrats have probably done what they have had to do in order to compete with the Republican machine that has found a way to silence in-fighting and has mobilized all of its members behind a common mission, I share your outrage. Much like a football team that plays not to lose rather than going for broke, the Democrats have gerrymandered the party lines to ensure that only those electable, mainstream few can be heard from the Democratic soapbox. Sadly, gone for now are the boat-rocking idealists, like you.

Indeed, your crusade is noble and just. But it is completely inappropriate as we draw closer to one of the most important elections in recent memory. This November is about more than talking points on the subject of Washingtons politics-as-usual ethos. We are embarking on a political war against extremism the likes of which weve only read about in text books. Think about the past four years, and ponder the next four cut from the same cloth. The Texas gunslinger in the West Wing has drawn his bright line in the dirt over which civil liberties, constitutional rights, and social and fiscal responsibility cross at their peril. He has turned his back on everyone but those who are lucky enough to be called his cronies. Surely you must see this. Those of us who understand that America will not survive another four years of John Ashcroft and Karl Rove have our imperative: defeat Bush at all costs.

Your declaration of candidacy threatens to end whatever chance we might have against this administration. Youve delivered Christmas in February to the RNC. The votes you receive in November will divide us and strengthen them. Thats a fact. We've already been there. To save our country and restore equality and fairness in Washington, we need your help. Please end your candidacy now and urge your supporters to do whats right for this country, and not just whats right for you.

We, the undersigned, are pledging our vote to the Democratic nominee this November, no matter how unappealing or unremarkable he might be. We are spreading this word to everyone we can, and then urging those people to do the same. We are behind your movement and ideals, Ralph, but discretion is the better part of valor, and right now, you need to stand down. We are going to nominate and elect a Democrat because only a Democrat can beat this administration. You are a great voice for the people, and we could really use your support in the coming months. But make no mistake: we are not going to let you sink this ship. Not again.
