MPAC Demands Serious Action from President Bush on Iraqi Prisoner Abuse sign now

We as Americans of conscience who struggle to promote human rights in our foreign policy demand that President George W. Bush seriously pursue the following actions in the aftermath of the reports indicating the abuse of Iraqi prisoners by the U.S. military:

We demand full disclosure on the systemic extent of the abuses by soldiers of prisoners and civilians in Iraq.

We call for full cooperation of the U.S. government with an independent international investigation into the treatment of Iraqi prisoners and civilians.

We ask that the perpetrators of these crimes that were committed against non-combatants face criminal charges as opposed to lenient administrative reprimands.

We demand investigations into reports that foreign contractors are ordering our U.S. soldiers to perform these hideous acts.

We ask that there be mandatory training on the Geneva accord for all members of the United States Army.

The actions taken by the soldiers representing the United States are reprehensible, extremely irresponsible and un-American. If gone without appropriate redress, these actions will also deepen the sense of isolation and mistrust our country is facing as more foreign governments in Europe, the Middle East and elsewhere are criticizing the military occupation of Iraq.
