MIT Should NOT Divest in Sudan sign now

To: President Susan Hockfield and the Advisor Committee on Shareholder Responsibility Petition for MIT to NOT Divest from Sudan

WHEREAS

(1) The atrocities taking place in Sudan are abhorrent in every sense of human decency

(2) The quality of life for the average Sudanese citizen is far below that of the developed world

(3) International companies provide valuable foreign currency to stimulate the economy and improve the quality of life of the average worker.

(4) The rebel forces are becoming increasingly more sophisticated in their weaponry due to outside sources of funding.

(5) The government of Sudan, whose actions came as a result of a direct attack on military compounds, agreed to sign peace treaties recognized by the United States, European Union, United Nations, African Union and The Arab League.

(6) One of the three rebel tribes has already signed the peace accord and has been incorporated in the current government.

(7) Divesting in the Sudanese government would send the wrong message to the rebel tribes who have refused to sign the peace treaty encouraging more violence

(8) Divesture would lead to greater hardships on the average person in Sudan, and would lead to the killing of more innocent people.

(9) The government of Sudan no longer supports the janjaweed, the Arab militia accused of committing many of the atrocities, and has sent its own troops to disarm them

(10) The Sudanese government has accepted the aid of the African Union by way of troops to help assist in expediting the peace process

(11) Khartoum has expressed a willingness to accept the help of the United Nation by way of financial and logistical support.

(12) The United Nations has not declared that the Sudanese regime of democratically elected president, Omar al-Bashir is committing genocide.

(13) Divestiture would be counter-productive to the goal of ending the suffering of millions of people, and would actually result in supporting the death of thousand more, and an overall decline in the quality of life of the individual citizens.

We, the undersigned, request the Massachusetts Institute of Technology not divest from companies doing business with the government in Sudan that has been working towards complying with international regulation and assuaging the situation.
