Memphis, TN : Controversy Over Confederate Parks sign now

For weeks we have listened to the controversy concerning a possible

renaming of Confederate Park, Jefferson Davis Park, and Nathan Bedford

Forrest Park because their current names pay homage to the Confederacy.

Mayor Herenton has suggested turning the parks over to a community group

and the University of Tennessee to keep the debate from further dividing

Memphians and MidSoutherners. This is not just a Memphis issue but

effects people all over our area. These parks promote tourism from

Civil War buffs and are a source of pride for those of us who are

descendants of Confederate veterans. Civil War tourism is big business

in our area . No one is NOT moving to the area (be it a business or

individual) because of these parks being here. No one is asking that

the National Civil Rights Museum be closed or renamed or any other

historical site or attraction be changed in any way and turnabout is

fair play. We the undersigned believe that these parks should remain as

is with the names that they have carried all these years intact. We

also believe that this controversy is being pushed by a small vocal

minority. Without roots no person or community can truly grow and

flourish. Please don't cut off the roots of thousands of

MidSoutherners. Thank you.
