McKinley Will Stop Offering Sonograms - Can We Afford It? sign now

We, the undersigned, are appalled by McKinley Health Center's plans to cease offering sonogram services at the end of this year.

Sonogram is an essential tool for early diagnosis of problematic ovarian cysts, and the only readily available method to accurately screen for ovarian cancer. McKinley's decision to end these services means that female students will have to leave McKinley and pay out-of-pocket to have their important health issues handled. Additionally, with up to a 40\% chance of developing cancer themselves, those with family histories of ovarian cancer risk losing recommended preventative care when their student insurance does not cover these services.

While ovarian cancer is not the most common of cancers, infrequent screenings makes it one of the most deadly, with more than 2/3 of cases found after the cancer has already metastasized. McKinley's decision to not retain a staff technician position in sonography over the past year has resulted in a lack of service that has led to documented medical hardship and expense for students dealing with diagnosed ovarian cysts. In choosing to stop offering the most reliable screening option for these conditions altogether, McKinley's plans to end sonogram services represents one giant step away from quality health care for female students.

Members of the UIUC community do not want to see McKinley take this step. We call upon McKinley administration to revisit its plans for the new year NOW, and in so doing, to hire a sonogram technician and retain its sonogram services for students.
