McGill Faculty of Medicine: give your student a fair and open appeal hearing. sign now

Dear Dean Levin,

Members of the academic community have heard of the failed promotion of one of your medical students on the sole basis of physicianship performance.

We are aware of the following about this student:

In his two years of clerkship he has

o handed in a one45 assignment late (Family Medicine Core)
o was late for morning lectures (Internal Medicine Core)
o handed in a chart note after the rotation ended, after he reviewed with Staff (Geriatrics Core)
o handed in rent late following an elective (Tenessee)
o late to three lectures on elective during January blizzards (New York)

This student was nominated for three physicianship awards, has won a physicianship essay award, is a Physicianship Apprentice leader, is on the committee for physicianship curriculum development, and organized and wrote the class pledge for the White Coat Ceremony.

We are also aware that this student was requested by the Promotions Committee to undergo a comprehensive psychiatric exam in order to pursue his studies despite no grounds nor verbal or written reason for this request. We feel that this was a violation of his human rights.

We are aware that there are no written regulations on longitudinal evaluation of physicianship (Student Red Handbook page 36) for the students to refer to in order to gauge their performance, nor for which this decision can be based upon.

We also believe that the facultys concerns over this student are contrary to the true meaning of physicianship. The facultys label of physicianship concerns for this student is misrepresentative of the true meaning of physicianship and are contrary to the teachings of this Faculty.

We believe that these actions against this student are not representative of the values and ethics that the McGill name represents.

This student has formal written letters of support from numerous Staff during the concerned electives vouching for his professional and physicianship reliability. And now, we, as close members of the academic community, are here to pledge our support for this students physicianship.

We urge you to reconsider the decision of the Promotions Committee against this student. Give this student a fair and open Appeal Hearing.
