Petition

We, the undersigned, call upon President George W. Bush and the United States Congress to withdraw a mere 1 percent of the proposed $500 billion allocated to defense spending in the 2005 budgetsome $5 billionand transfer it to the federal budget for education. American society prides itself on being egalitarian. Our federal government is charged with the responsibility of ensuring equal educational opportunities to all the countrys children, regardless of their race or their parents income. We believe that in recent years our government has grievously neglected this vital duty. More and more minority and low-income American children are not getting the same education as their wealthier peers. Many of them join the armed forces in hopes of getting the higher education and job training they cannot otherwise afford, thus putting their lives on the line for an education.

How can an egalitarian society allow such a state of affairs? We therefore appeal to you, our leaders, men and women of honor, to take a tiny fraction of the money our government spends on its war machine and devote it to helping impoverished students to gain the education they seek, without being compelled to join the military.

We ask you, President Bush and members of Congress, to help our country
MAKE THINKERS, NOT KILLERS.
