Maintain the Education Tripos at the University of Cambridge sign now

We, the undersigned, call upon the University of Cambridge to maintain the Education Tripos. This petition is fully endorsed by the Head of the Faculty of Education and senior staff there, and reflects the position of the vast majority of the academic staff at the Faculty.

A committee set up to review the status of the Social Sciences in the university has recently made its recommendations known. Among these, it has been suggested that the Education Tripos should be withdrawn from 2012.

We are strongly opposed to this proposal. We believe that the loss of the Education Tripos would reflect negatively not only on students of the course but also on the public perception of the University. We deplore the lack of support that this proposal implies for the many non-traditional subjects covered by the Education Tripos, such as Drama in Performance, Childrens Literature, Creativity and Thinking, or Film, which are unique in Cambridge and represent new and exciting fields of academic research. We feel that this proposal neglects the critical need, at a national and an international level, for excellent teachers and excellent educational specialists. We also judge that this proposal poses an indirect threat on graduate courses at the Faculty of Education.

In support for this petition, we call upon the University to consider the following facts:
- The Education Tripos witnessed an increased number of applications in 2009, counter to the trend within the Social Sciences in the University
- With over 66\% of students coming from state schools, the Education Tripos is far above the average of 58\% in the University of Cambridge.
- Contrary to claims made by the Committee, there is no evidence that the Education Tripos is of a lower standard than any other subject in Cambridge. With 17\% of First Class Degrees and 63\% of Upper Seconds in 2009, exam results in the Education Tripos do not differ from the university average. External boards of Examiners have confirmed that the Tripos is one of the strongest in the country.

In light of all this, we entreat you to invalidate the Committees proposal and to maintain the Education Tripos, a unique, challenging, pluridisciplinary undergraduate course in the University of Cambridge.

I regarded it a privilege to study on the Education Tripos. Surely it is vital that it remains if Cambridge seeks to maintain its integrity as an educational institution. In my opinion, for those who aim to be at the forefront of education in the future,

Teaching is devalued enough, despite being one of the most important things to get right. Land Economy should be first against the wall.

Education. Education. Education, eh! A hollow echo if this goes ahead.

In addition to the points made in the Petition's statement it is also important to stress that Education makes a major contribution to social science research within the University. Education research is social science research and this has traditionally

The Education Faculty is part of what makes Cambridge diverse and leagues ahead of any other university. It is top in its field in terms of research, staff members and facilities. To disband it would be to undermine all the other 'new' courses in Cambridg
