Madison Public Schools Save the Arts sign now

The Madison Metropolitan School District in Wisconsin is once again bracing for more belt-tightening. With the state revenue caps still in existence, large school districts, like Madison, are being hit very hard. We have more students with disabilities as well as students who need free and reduced lunch than most school districts in Wisconsin. Historically when school budgets get cut, programs such as art and music are the first to go. Unfortunately, this IS the case in Madison once again.

Elementary Strings will NOT be on the chopping block this time due to the enormous efforts of the strings staff, students, and parents who rallied for 2 years to save 4th grade strings. Thank you for your efforts as well as showing us that we CAN make a difference if we speak loud enough.

Elementary Art and Music ARE IN DANGER of more cuts. A few years ago, elementary art and music teachers had time allocated for chorus, art shows, working with special needs students, as well as adaptation for special needs students. We were cut in 1998 by increasing our student load by 3 sections (3 hours) per week.

This time, the district is proposing to DOUBLE UP classes as well as increasing the total sections, which will require nearly ALL ARTS STAFF to travel to another school. We could potentially see between 30-36 students in Kindergarten through 3rd grade. SAGE numbers will only apply to regular classrooms. The district says this will not affect students time in music and art. However, IT WILL.

With 2 schools and up to 650 students, music and art teachers will need to drastically change how they teach. Art displays, number of projects, types of projects, use of musical instruments, concerts, etc... will all need to be reduced dramatically. In addition, staff will no doubt burn out quicker and leave the school district or possibly even leave the profession.

At the core of these cuts is the question: Is Football (or any sport for that matter) more important than the ARTS? If it were, wouldnt it be a course during the school day? Shouldnt the school district be cutting after school programs before touching ANYTHING during the school day?

Why does it seem that if we cancel football it will be the fall of our society and culture, but the arts are no longer important in our lives? How can one learn to think or feel or express themselves if they are not allowed to step back and really look at
