Letter to University of Cincinnati Diversity Council sign now

Dear Diversity Council Member:

I write to remind you of that even though we have not received a full time LGBTQ staff person for the 2009-2010 school year, there is still a need for a dedicated staff member and an appropriate space to serve the University of Cincinnati LGBTQ student populations. LGBTQ and allied students, UC faculty and staff, and members of the Cincinnati community rely on the Diversity Councils decisions and statements to be representational of UCs commitment to ALL kinds of diversity.
The LGBTQ community has been told time and time again that the needs of the community have been given full consideration. This years reason that the LGBTQ community has been given is that because of the current financial circumstances, a full time staff position is not a possibility. Although I recognize that finances are a major problem across the University, it is time now to consider where the finances should come from to successfully bring a full time LGBTQ staff person starting in the 2010-2011 academic year.
The benefits that a full time LGBTQ Staff member could provide to the UC community are too numerous to count. A full time staff person could be a liaison from the LGBTQ campus groups to the University, and most importantly, they could provide resources to incoming and current UC students, UC faculty and staff, as well as other UC community members.
The other issue that the UC LGBTQ community has been working on is acquiring an appropriate permanent space. Steger 681 is not an appropriate space for the needs of the LGBTQ students, staff, and community. The space that is currently a temporary space has previously been used as a closet for storage for Student Health Services. According to the floor plans and the University Fire Marshal, Steger 681 has a capacity of eight people. An appropriate space would also be a space that is autonomous from other diversity entities. While budget constraints may be limiting the position of a full time LGBTQ staff person, it should not be limiting an appropriately sized and appropriately located permanent space.
I thank you for your attention to this important matter and all of your support in our efforts to have a full time staff member and a permanent space to serve LGBTQ and allied students at the University of Cincinnati. I trust that you understand the urgency and seriousness of the need for these services, and I hope that you will continue to support all types of diversity by understanding the difference that funding a full time LGBTQ staff member and supporting an appropriate permanent LBGTQ space could make for the entire UC community.
