Layla Ibrahim is innocent - End the prosecution of rape survivors sign now

Layla Ibrahim was attacked in January 2009 by two strangers as she was walking home after a night out. She was 21. She was knocked to the ground, lost consciousness, and sustained injuries to her face, breasts and vagina, and concussion from a blow to the head. She reported the assault to the police. After very little investigation, they claimed that her injuries were self-inflicted and pressed her to retract her allegation. She refused. The police already knew her family as they had suffered racist attacks and had complained about biased officers. They not only refused to pursue a prosecution, but charged Ms Ibrahim with perverting the course of justice. During her trial it became clear that evidence had not been gathered, or had been lost or destroyed. But the police actions were not challenged by her lawyers as they should have been. In June 2010 Ms Ibrahim was convicted and sentenced to three years in prison. She was pregnant at the time and gave birth in prison. She has now been released. While 90% of rapes are never reported and only 6.7% of those reported lead to a conviction, a growing number of rape survivors have been jailed after they refused to retract their allegation. Ms Ibrahim’s attackers have never been identified but similar attacks have been reported before and after in that area.[Layla's story: jailed after reporting a sexual assault, Guardian Weekend ]http://www.guardian.co.uk/law/2011/aug/12/layla-jailed-after-reporting-sexual-assaultWe the undersigned believe Ms Layla Ibrahim to be innocent and the victim of a miscarriage of justice. We demand that her conviction be overturned and her name cleared. We demand an end to the prosecution of rape survivors. Such prosecutions discourage victims from coming forward, and encourage rapists to believe they can get away with it
