Lawrence Fire and Police Departments sign now

Background (Preamble):

Does the urban city of Lawrence with over 72,000 residents need a fully staffed police department with specialized units in fraud, theft, drugs and community policing?

Does the city of Lawrence need a fully staffed fire department and active fire stations throughout the city?

Lawrence residents say YES to the police department!

On June 30th 2010, 24 police officers were laid off and specialized policing units including drug and auto theft / fraud, were shut down due to budget constraints. Usually each month there are approximately 32 car thefts in the city. The first week of July alone there were more than 30 thefts. There is an increase in prostitution. The city is at real risk of regressing back to the crime levels that gave Lawrence a bad name. We the taxpayers of Lawrence want our police force back in order to protect ourselves, our property and our community. We believe that anything other than emergency measures to reinstate the police positions will result in irreparable damage to the city that will be far more costly than immediately reinstating the lost police jobs and departments.

Lawrence residents say YES to the fire department!

Lawrence is an older, urban working class city consisting of many 2 and 3 family homes in close proximity to one another. A fire in one home that is not quickly controlled can easily lead to a fire spreading and taking down an entire neighborhood. No new firefighters have been hired in Lawrence since 2005. Since that time, there have been at least 56 firefighters laid-off or entering into retirement. Lawrence recently closed 3 firehouses. Response times to fires have dramatically increased putting the citizens of Lawrence at risk.

Petition:
We the undersigned residents and registered voters of Lawrence, Massachusetts urge the City Council, Mayor, State Representatives, State Senators and Governor of the Commonwealth to defend our families, homes, property and community with the appropriate amount of fire and police protection for the city of Lawrence. The undersigned residents believe the city to be in a State of Emergency without adequate fire and police protection.
