Large Scale Apps on WebOS sign now

Dear HP:

The following is a petition from the current users, homebrew developers, and enthusiasts of the WebOS operating system that you have recently acquired from Palm.

As you might have already noticed, there is a very strong grassroot community of people who have fallen in love with this operating system, that Palm released to us less than 18 months ago.

While we were at first ecstatic that such a large company as yourself had acquired our favorite OS and saved it from possible extinction, we have presently become slightly concerned about its future prospects.

According to a recent Nielsen rating, WebOS currently stands at 1.3\% of user adoption for mobile operating systems. This is very, very, very low.

Now while all of us in the WebOS community know that this operating system has some of the best and most advanced features and UI of any mobile OS available, (and you do too, that is why you bought it) the average consumer does not care. There is only one thing that sells Mobile OSes currently in this market as far as mass consumer adoption is concerned: Apps.

Currently, the one lacking feature of WebOS is the number of professional apps in its app catalog, and it is in our opinion hurting WebOS adoption significantly.

Having great developer programs, easy to code SDK's and giving out free handsets to developers is only half the battle. This will only attract low-end independent and first time developers, and while they do create great apps as seen in the catalog, the majority of apps missing are from large name developers.

These developers do not care about getting a free phone, or how easy it is to code for WebOS. They make millions of dollars a month on other platforms. All they care about is a return on investment. They want mass consumer bases for their app development.

At the same time, consumers are passing on this great OS because it lacks the very apps from these types of developers. Thus, you have a 'chicken and egg' issue that can only be solved in one way. That is for HP to directly invest into getting these large name apps created by paying the developers to make them on WebOS. This jump-start will get consumers to come to WebOS, and then large scale developers will make apps by their own accord.

Do not waste a $1.2 Billion dollar acquisition due to arrogance. Please invest heavily in app development for WebOS now through direct payment of development of apps now, or else we believe that users will forever continue to dismiss this excellent operating system no matter what other features you load it with. Apps sell Mobile OSes, period.

Here is an example list that we have compiled at Precentral of the kinds of apps we want to see HP invest in creating for WebOS
