Landmark West Park Presbyterian Church sign now

**On July 14, 2009, the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) held a public hearing to consider designating West-Park Presbyterian Church as an NYC Individual Landmark. Prior to the hearing, over 700 people signed a petition urging the LPC to hold a hearing on West-Park. Now that a public hearing has been held, add your name to the petition below (already signed offline by over 200 people), calling on the eleven Commissioners to take a vote and designate West-Park Presbyterian Church as an Individual Landmark.

To: NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission

I support the landmark designation of West-Park Presbyterian Church, for nearly 125 years an anchor of the West Side community at 86th St. and Amsterdam Avenue. Leopold Edilitz, one of the most important 19th-century architects, designed the 1884 chapel, and architect Henry F. Kilburn designed the 1890 Richardsonian Romanesque Revival-style sanctuary. Despite a vote of the West-Park congregation to support preservation of this architectural gem, church leaders abandoned the building two years ago in order to make way for ill-considered tower development plans, which fell through. (Church opposition was the reason for excluding West-Park from the Upper West Side/Central Park West Historic District in 1990.) West-Park is still at risk of demolition by neglect. However, with the prospect of landmark protection, West-Park Presbyterian Church is on the cusp of a vibrant new life. At the LPCs July 14th hearing**, the West Side community will be out in full force to show our support for saving West-Park!
