Keep the Original Dub Cast for the Cowboy Bebop Movie sign now

This petition was established on January 25, 2002. At the time of this writing, it was confirmed that Columbia/TriStar's upcoming DVD release of the animated film, "Metropolis", would contain a trailer for another animated film called "Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on Heaven's Door". The latter film recently completed a theatrical run in Japan, where it received a great deal of critical acclaim.

Yet in the United States, we have known of Cowboy Bebop long before this. It originally began as an animated series, one that had a run of twenty-six episodes. This show is available on its entirety in the United States, on video and DVD. We have seen it, and we greatly enjoy it. As a result, we are greatly anticipating the U.S. release of "Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on Heaven's Door".

But there is a problem.

The original Cowboy Bebop series was released here by Bandai Entertainment, both in its original Japanese form, and also dubbed in English. The English dub of Cowboy Bebop is held in high regard and is considered by many to be the finest English dub of any anime, ever. Our fondness of it can be attributed to the talent both of the voice director and of the voice cast for the English dub. In watching the show, we have come to associate the English voices for the show's characters, with their characters. David Lucas -is- Spike Spiegel. Wendee Lee -is- Faye Valentine. Beau Billingsley -is- Jett Black.

Although Columbia/TriStar's track record indicates that in most respects they will do an excellent job with the DVD (and possibly theatrical) release of "Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on Heaven's Door", the original show was released by Bandai Entertainment, not Columbia/TriStar. This, combined with some potential constraints imposed by the Screen Actor's Guild, has raised fears that the Columbia/TriStar release will contain a different voice cast than the original series, with the characters we know and love so well voiced by entirely different actors.

It is a gross understatement to say that casting different voice actors in these roles would be greatly upsetting to a large portion of the film's target audience. Yet such is the case.

We therefore petition Columbia/TriStar to do anything and everything in its power to retain, for the purposes of the film "Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on Heaven's Door", the original English voice cast of the Cowboy Bebop series.
