Keep Inexperienced Woodsmen out of the Alaskan Wild sign now

Alaska is a forbidding, untamed, and unpredictable wilderness. The extremes in weather and unforgiving terrain present sizable obstacles and hardships to the inexperienced woodsman. In extreme cold, one may suffer hypothermia, frostnip, and frostbite. Conversely, the heat, yes Alaska has summers, may mislead those new to Alaska. Neophytes to the Alaskan wild may suffer heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and dehydration. Extreme forces of nature, such as avalanches, lightning, high winds, and rock falls, endanger the lives of even the most experienced adventurers. Rivers that criss-cross the entire state are huge obstacles that must be forged or portaged. A flooded river, or any river for that matter, is hard to judge. An inexperienced woodsman may underestimate the raging waters and attempt a crossing. Wild animals and insects may attack, and the inexperienced would not know what to do in those situations.

In addition to the natural dangers presented by the wild, there are several ways that human error can endanger the lives of woodsmen. Many die in the wild from the lack of proper equipment, lack of appropriate first aid, and lack of food. Even when an inexperienced woodsmen has the right equipment, the lack of experience may hinder him or her from using them correctly.

For all these reason, inexperienced woodsmen and woodswomen should be kept out of Alaska. Proficiency tests should be administered by the Parks Service to gauge whether or not a person is qualified to venture into the Alaskan wild. If one should pass the test, then one would be issued a license. In this fashion, the safety of both the woodsman and the wild will be preserved.
