Keep ESPN the Worldwide Leader in Sports sign now

To: The Staff, Stars, and Powers That Be at ESPN

We, the viewers of your programming, realize that your networks name stands for Entertainment and Sports Programming Network; however, we feel that the latter of the two has suffered greatly in the promotion of the former. Many viewers are living in areas away from our home states, and we rely on your twenty-four hour-a-day sports news to keep up with our favorite teams. However, as of late, your network has begun spending a great deal of time creating shows such as Stump the Schwab, Beg, Borrow, and Deal, Dream Job, and Outside the Lines, all of which spend more time focusing on the current trends of reality television and cheap thrills to garner ratings than they do on sports news and information. True sports fans are becoming tired of the circus these shows create and lament the fact that airing them cuts into the time allotted to Baseball Tonight, NFL Primetime, and College GameDay. Sadly, the continuing coverage of trick pool shots, Poker, and Bass fishing in addition to the influx of shows such as ESPN Hollywood only illustrates that this trend is not going to change any time soon, and we felt the need to make our voices heard.

For us, SportsCenter is the beginning and end of each day. It is our way of keeping track of what happened in those games we cannot see because of geographical or time constraints. However, each baseball club, for example, is not given equal time in the show, and those that are often fall victim to the Weiner Race Syndrome, which means that your network tends to focus on the oddities surrounding the game rather than the game itself. Funny as those items might be, they cut into an already slim allotment of time, and that is not what we want to see. The same applies to the 50 States in 50 Days segment your network recently aired. Each day, nearly one fifth of the program was lost to insipid segments detailing the squabble over the Field of Dreams or the World Senior Racquetball Championships. Granted, they are interesting items for ESPN2 or ESPN.com to cover, but they have no place on SportsCenter.

Your network was created to give sports fans around the nation a way to enjoy sports in an altogether new way, but you have lost sight of that original goal. If you do not believe that we are angry about your current programming schedule, take a poll and find the truth in this statement. Drop the hype, dont pander to fads, and keep the commentators focused on the games that make your network great!
