Keep Devon Prep an enlightened school sign now

Dear Devon Preparatory School Administration,

As Devon Alumni, we remember fondly classes from Freshman English to AP Chemistry. For the Humanities department, one remarkable aspect of our studies was never feeling constrained or limited in our learning by some fear of reality, some need to hide the truth of things from us tender students.

We prided Devon on being forward-thinking. We celebrated our Christian classrooms as they taught the theory of evolution, as we read books describing sexual love between man and wife. And we could watch such scenes recognizing the beauty of union as intended by God.

Unfortunately, some of the current faculty is not so forward-thinking as we would expect of our beloved alma mater. Some have decided to plunge our students into ignorance of the beauty of appropriate sexuality in any visual representation, leaving them unprepared for the vast world of such material, as they will doubtlessly encounter it in college.

To deprive our students of viewing the works of Shakespeare, Chaucer--truly any great figure in literature--is nothing less than disingenuous in a college preparatory school. Furthermore, it demonstrates a needless shame of the body, a shame that seems to embrace our fallen state. Rather, shouldn't we embrace the beauty of sexuality? And in our greatest works of art, oughtn't we celebrate the human body as the Lord created it?

To this end, we, the alumni of Devon Preparatory School, request these changes in school policy:

1. That students be allowed to watch films or performances of great literary works in which human sexuality and/or violence are depicted. These are facts of life, after all, and we as Christians should celebrate sexual union between man and wife. As for violence, the taking of human life or assault on it is taken seriously in literature, dealt with maturely. Students should see the impacts of violence rather than senseless drivel from the media. This request refers to works falling inside accepted literary canon, as to aptly prepare Devon students for college.

2. That students be allowed to watch films or performances of great historical value in which human sexuality and/or violence are depicted. These are facts of life, after all, and we as Christians should celebrate sexual union between man and wife. As for violence, the taking of human life or assault on it is taken seriously in historical works, dealt with maturely. Students should see the impacts of violence rather than senseless drivel from the media.

3. That students be allowed to study the human body and celebrate it in their artwork. Therefore, the art classes ought to involve figure drawing. To deny our bodies is to deny our potential for Grace on earth.

Gratuitous sex and violence plague our nation these days, our very society. If Devon Prep falls silent on these issues and hides from them in this way, only the media remains to speak to the students about what appears right and wrong. Showing true love and human nature as God intended in great works of artthat is Devons opportunity to show her students the morality we strive for, and also highlight the quality of education they are receiving. In education, fear is the enemy. Fear breeds ignorance; ignorance breeds immorality; immorality breeds more of itself, growing more wretched with each generation. To speak clearly and powerfully as only art can will preserve our principles and etch them indelibly into the students who pass through Devons halls.

And so we ask you: do not take away the quality of a Devon education; do not stamp out the brilliant light of art.
