How Low Will Clear Channel Go?

The erosion of local programming is accelerating even faster than the Louisiana shoreline and recovering gulf coast residents awoke on the morning of January 5, 2007 to the bland flavor of a syndicated radio show, as Clear Channel demonstrates once again its blatant disdain for original local programming. CJ & Company, helmed by New Orleans veteran DJ, CJ Superstar Morgan, whose daily moniker CJ Morgan you a fool! has been touted by twelve year olds, elected officials and seniors alike was abruptly released after spending 16 years as New Orleans number one morning show DJ.

Positioned between Lil Waynes Stuntin Like My Daddy and TIs Top Back, were innumerable calls to discuss hot local topics like the Road Home Program, inflated post Katrina rent, Harry Lees plan to illegally stop black males in Jefferson Parish and the lack of hot lunches in the public schools. There were also original segments like Loveem or Leaveem, a local call-in show on which listeners discussed the status of their love lives and listening truck drivers would pull over to the nearest roads shoulder to hear the final verdict. Once African-American New Orleanians realize that one of their favorite imported sons and one of their most accessible media outlets in their city has been taken away, I have no doubt that they will decide to leaveem them being Clear Channel.

At a time when most of the inhabitants of the Crescent City are clinging to the few things in their life that remain unchanged, it seems unusually malicious that a media behemoth like Clear Channel, the owner of 1200 stations throughout the U.S. and its number one decision maker Randy Michaels would pick Q93 93.3 FM to terrorize, just to save a buck. Very protective of what is uniquely ours, I second the emotion that most New Orleanians would express if allowed to on-air Randy Michaels, you a fool!
