JUSTICE FOR ETHIOPIANS sign now

10 Downing Street
London
SW1A 2AA

Dear Prime Minister,

We, the undersigned Ethiopians living in the United Kingdom and British citizens of Ethiopian origin, as well as Ethiopians and friends of Ethiopia worldwide, hereby seek your assistance in putting an end to the continued intimidation, unjustified imprisonment, and worst of all, brutal killings of innocent Ethiopians by the dictatorial government of EPRDF. We humbly ask you to stop supporting the phony Prime Minister Meles Zenawi and start listening to the true voice of the Ethiopian people.

As you are no doubt aware, Ethiopians have been stripped off their human rights and freedom of speech in Ethiopia, a self-professed democratic country. The capital, Addis Ababa, has been turned into a bloody battleground since 1st November 2005 when Meless robotic soldiers ruthlessly massacred unarmed demonstrators for speaking their minds about the recent fraudulent election results. To our dismay, the heartless killing of our children, sisters and brothers is still going on today outside the capital.

The Ethiopian people demand this insanity to stop now. The use of live ammunition on civilians has to cease this instant. We want freedom of speech restored; the right for free press and access to government-controlled media granted evenly to all political parties. We request to be informed of the correct results of the May 2005 election and the winner party to take its rightful place in government. Let justice for all be implemented throughout the land without fail.

We particularly demand the urgent release of unknown number of detained civilians who are currently facing the risk of torture; as well as members of the opposition party and high profile personalities some of whom are listed below. Amnesty International has declared that it considers these individuals are as prisoners of conscience.

1. Engineer Hailu Shawel - Member of Parliament and President of the Coalition for Unity and Democracy (CUD)
2. Dr. Berhanu Nega - Member of Parliament, Mayor of Addis Ababa and University Professor of Economics
3. Dr Befekadu Degeffe - Member of CUD's Executive Committee
4. Dr. Hailu Araya - Member of CUD's Executive Committee
5. Prof. Mesfin Wolde Mariam - former Chair of the Ethiopian Human Rights
6. Ms Birtukan Mideksa - CUD Vice-President, lawyer and former judge
7. Maj. Getachew Mengiste - Senior member of CUD and elected Member of Parliament
8. Dr Yacob Hailemariam - CUD Member of Parliament and former UN Special Envoy
9. Mr Debebe Eshetu - CUD public relations officer
10. Muluneh Eyual - CUD secretary general
11. Daniel Bekele (m) - Policy Director of ActionAid (a non-governmental organization)
12. Mr Bedru Adem - an independent member of Parliament

The Ethiopian people have witnessed too many unlawful deaths and illegal imprisonments for too long and suffered enormously at the hands of this rogue administration and frankly, we have had enough. We emphatically urge you, Prime Minister, your government and the British public to help us take an immediate action to stop these atrocities and help us in our endeavour to build a free and genuinely democratic Ethiopia. Let us not wait for a moment longer as our families lives are in grave danger right now.

Thanking you in anticipation.
