Jabbar Gibson's Candidacy for Medal of Freedom sign now

To the authorities at local, state and federal level:

We urge you not to indict and imprison Jabbar Gibson, a 20-year old man who put the abandoned New Orleans school bus to proper use taking the stranded victims of Hurricane Katrina and its destructive aftermath to safety in Houston on Wednesday, August 31, 2005.

While FEMA and Homeland Security's response were wholly inadequate to the point of negligence (local New Orleans government could not retrieve dozens of school and transit buses for usage at a critical time before levees broke as well), Jabbar decided to take the matter into his hands and commandeer the bus to load the people, including the elderly and children, and drive for 7 hours straight to reach Reliant Astrodome in Houston.

For this inspiring action of heroism as demonstrated by a United States citizen, Jabbar Gibson should be greeted with accolade instead of threatening the person in question with charges pertaining to vehicle theft because of the prejudice related to his skin color.

Jabbar appropriated the bus in the time of emergency and he did not intend to "steal" the bus to keep as the mainsteam media reported what is described in a sensationalistic term "the act of extreme looting".

For the act of heroism in saving the lives of dozens from suffering & perishing to the terrifying aftermath of a natural disaster (dehydration, starvation and severe health crisis caused by the toxicity of polluted flood water as well as human waste in the unsanitary situation) it would be of great honor that Jabbar Gibson be awarded Presidential Medal of Freedom or Congressional Gold Medal of Honor as a token of public appreciation and gratitude.
