Is James Allen the right man for the job? sign now

Dear ITV Sport

As a die-hard fan and follower of F1 on the box, I grew up listening to James Hunt and Murray Walker commentating on the sport that I love with a passion. That passion was also transmitted through the box via these two legendary commentators. James was always ready to offer an insider view point to an incident and was never afraid of speaking his mind, while Murray who stood throughout his commentary, sounded like he was always on the edge of his seat as the racing intensified.

When Martin Brundle finally finished his F1 racing career and joined Murray in the commentators box, I think we all felt that those magic days of James and Murray were back and over the years the quality of the commentary was fantastic, probably even of a higher standard than when James was by Murrays side. Martin has been able to offer us all an insight into the modern world of Formula 1 racing and his technical understanding and the way in which he is able to translate this across to the whole viewing audience is first rate.

The day that Murray finally decided to hang up the mic was a dark one. Yes, he got his words mixed up from time to time, but that was part of his charm, his character, and above all else what he brought to the mic in bucket loads was passion and excitement.

It was always going to be a huge task to fill those shoes and despite several seasons now having passed, the general feeling with race fans is that James Allen simply has not been able to fill that void left by Murray. Scan across the numerous forums relating to F1 on the Internet and youll see the same comments time and time again. I think it is now time to consider offering the role of anchor commentator to a new face, a new talent, and someone who can reignite the energy and passion that has been missing in the commentary for many years now.

The only saving grace when watching a race these days on ITV is the input and commentary from Martin Brundle. It is therefore time to source another commentator whos as passionate about the sport as Murray was. We dont want someone who focuses so much on the strategy of the modern era that they forget that the audience at home want to be able to feel the excitement and adrenalin from the track. Martin is on hand to offer the technical insights and to make controversial comments straight from the hip, which he does so well. It is the role of the lead commentator to bring the thrill of an F1 meeting direct to us through the TV and James is simply not delivering.

More and more viewers are now watching the ITV feed with the sound off and switching on their radios, or logging onto the web for commentary feeds. This is a sign of the dislike to the current line up and we all want you to consider a new face to reside along side Martin Brundle so we can all switch off the radios and turn the volume back up on our TV sets.

James was fine as a pit lane reporter, but he simply doesnt cut the mustard as a lead commentator.

All we ask of you at ITV Sport is to consider a new face for F1 to join Martin in the commentary box.
