Iowa's Child Predator Laws in Need of Reconsideration sign now

Dear Elected Officials,

On behalf of the parents of elementary schools in Iowa, I ask you to represent our opinions about the current child predator laws in Iowa. We feel as though the current status of these laws do not provide enough safety for our children, and we respectfully request that our opinions be heard. The current laws in effect do not take into account the psychological mindset of child predators. The recidivism rates for these particular kinds of criminals are reasonably higher than the rates for many other kinds of offenders, showing that the likelihood of a repeat offense in the future is fairly high.

We urge you to take into account cases such as that of Dean Schwartzmiller, who was a child predator officially convicted in six states that have similar laws to Iowas laws regarding sex offenders. He was released, convicted, and re-released several times on multiple charges of child molestation. He and his housemate had names of over 36,000 boys they had molested in spiral notebooks when they were finally arrested and sentenced to multiple life sentences. Such atrocities are possible with the way Iowas laws regarding child predators are set up, and that needs to change.
Our general knowledge suffices to understand that taxpayers may need to intervene to keep these criminals from obtaining parole. Although the best course of action may be yet discovered, we have devised two similar solutions to this dilemma.

1st Solution (stage 1 solution): Institute harsher fines for particular non-violent offenders, more specifically petty drug offenders, instead of sentencing them to time in prison. With this solution, the state can collect more money from drug offenders as well as hopefully serve as a deterrent to keep them out of prison, thus saving money that would have been spent to keep these petty drug offenders in jail and using it to keep convicted child predators in jail.

2nd Solution (stage 2 solution): Institute more strict punishments for all offenders. A system of cost versus benefits is none-the-more prevalent in the criminal mind. By, in essence, upping the ante criminals will be forced to take greater risks and will consequently be deterred from committing crimes. The money that would have gone to keeping these convicts in prison could go directly to keeping child predators from obtaining parole and/or the risk would be too high for child predators and they would restrain themselves from committing a criminal act.

Although there are added depths and complications to these solutions that can only be discovered through the eyes of someone who truly understands how our legal system works, we offer these up whole-heartedly, in an admission of our possible perceptual shortcomings, at an attempt to show our urgency and passion towards this issue. We know that you can help us to change these laws for the better, and make a powerful statement to would-be child predators that we have zero tolerance towards their actions.
