Independent Artists and Fans Declare War On The Music Industry sign now

The purpose of this petition is for independent artists and fans to make their collective voices heard against the corporate music industry. This petition calls for the U.S. Supreme Court to disband both the RIAA and Clear Channel Communications for anti-competitive business practices, anti-trust law violations, and illegal advertising policies intended to manipulate CD prices.

Currently, all major labels have been consolidated under five parent companies which control 85\% of the music market. The RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) is a trade association and lobbying company which proliferates the agenda of these companies by defrauding artists of fair royalties (artists may be lucky to get .5\% from an album that nets $1,000,000), overcharging the fans by inflating CD prices (The Federal Trade Commission estimates that the industry's "Minimum Advertised Price" policy may have cost U.S. consumers an extra $480 million over the past three years, while the average CD price has risen 41\% over the past five years), and manipulating the market into an industrial monopoly.

Likewise, the radio sector has also been monopolized by Clear Channel Communications, which owns controls 60\% of all music programming through its ownership of 1,200 radio stations, 37 television stations, and over 200 concert venues nationwide (including ownership of SFX, the single largest concert promoter in the United States). Until 1996, the Federal Communications Commission regulated ownership of radio stations, allowing a single company to own no more than two stations. With the passage of the Telecommunications Act of 1996, these laws were overturned. Prior to this, the radio industry was divided among 5,133 owners, as opposed to the current four (of which Clear Channel Communications is the largest). Clear Channel Communications dominates a majority of commercial radio as well as concert venues and promotion, allowing them to blacklist radio airplay for artists who perform at non-exclusive venues.

Since the music industry is primarily concerned with numbers, the goal of this petition is to "go platinum", or to reach 1,000,000 signatures. At this point, the petition will be sent to the Supreme Court and members of Congress.

What difference can this make? In all probability, this may not change any laws. However, the impact could still be decisive in the fight against the industry. The industry cannot help but notice the collective voices of independent artists, fans, and local scenes taking a stand against the corrupt practices mentioned above. Even if they deny our presence, it will still be a clear victory for independent music, created and flourishing outside of the corrupt monopolistic music industry.

Although I had never really noticed such things were happening, I'm glad I was finally enlightened. I, for one, do not buy CD's period. I'd always found that I never liked but a couple songs on a CD, so I always burned my own. On the 25th of June,03, I le
