This Petition is a call to action for communities plagued by the urban violence and illegal gun trade.

Troubled young black men need a new program

Violence in Pittsburgh, particularly in the black community, has become genocidal. African-American youth fight and kill each other, mainly young men caught up in a daily combat fueled by lack of jobs, desperation and financial gain through crime and deviancy.

While it seems only to affect the depressed communities of our nation, multitudes of white and Latin youth are caught up in this web of gun violence also. It seems hopeless to an older generation forced to experience this malady through the untimely loss of their children. I see individuals taking a stand and saying "no more" but greater power lies within numbers.

This is a universal problem in America. The legacy of people of all ethnicities for the most part has been one of hope and tolerance, love and empowerment as we pass along the values, morals and principles of those who came before us to our children, educating them about the importance of striving for excellence.

In 1932 President Franklin D. Roosevelt understood that our nation was in trouble economically. The unemployment rate was at an all-time high and we were in economic chaos. It was time for innovation and development. A bill passed during the Depression under President Roosevelt which made it possible for young men to grow, learn and gain marketable skills through a new program.

President Roosevelt revitalized the faith of the nation with several measures, one of which was the Emergency Conservation Work Act, more commonly known as the Civilian Conservation Corps. With this action, he brought together two wasted resources -- the young men and the land -- in an effort to save both.

I want to start a citizens' lobby to reinstate the CCC, and I want to know what Pittsburghers think. To respond, please contact me at [email protected] I believe this is a way to improve the human condition of all young people and to ensure stability and growth for the future of our nation. Let's all join together to bring about change. Together We CAN!
