Increase Alcohol Education and Awareness on CSULB Campus sign now

I am pleased to write this letter in support of the efforts of the graduate students in Health Science 625 in Promoting Healthy Alcohol Choices & Education (P.H.A.C.E.). The P.H.A.C.E. organization with the collaboration of local (CSULB) organizations aims to increase alcohol education and awareness on the CSULB campus by advocating for the inclusion of alcohol education literature/information into the SOAR and University 100 programs.

Alcohol consumption and its results are a widespread problem on most college campuses and CSULB is no exception. Nationwide, more than 44\% of college students participate in binge drinking (5 or more drinks daily). 27\% of frequent binge drinkers have been hurt or injured as compared to 3\% of non-binge drinkers while driving under the influence. Also, 57\% of frequent binge drinkers under the influence are 27 times more likely than non-binge drinkers to engage in unwanted sexual intercourse. In addition, 48.2\% (2000) and 44.3\% (2002) of 17-20 year olds nationwide reported having at least one negative experience associated with alcohol in the last 12 months of those respective years.

In 2003, there were 115 arrests made for liquor violations on the CSULB campus alone. Surveys conducted in 2000 and 2002 reveal that 34.8\% of respondents drove under the influence of alcohol at least once in the last 12 months of those respective years. Nearly one-third of 17-20 year old respondents admitted to consuming 3 drinks per week on average. In 2002, 37\% of 17-20 year old respondents took part in risky drinking behavior (greater than 4 drinks per hour) at least once in the last 30 days. Furthermore, males were more likely to engage in risky drinking behavior. Finally, the percentage of respondents engaging in risky drinking behaviors has increased from 2000 to 2002.

Although current resources available on the CSULB campus are directed towards alcohol education, they are not currently being utilized to their full potential. Many students, faculty and staff are unaware of such alcohol programs and resources, especially incoming freshmen. We would greatly appreciate your support for P.H.A.C.E. in order to increase the education and awareness of proper alcohol consumption, make light of the mental and physical consequences of alcohol consumption and inform students of the CSULB policies and resources available.
