Inconvenient BMEN 260 Course Offering sign now

This petition is pertinent to the Spring 2007 course BMEN 260: Intro to Organic and Biochemistry. Only one section is currently available, convening on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8:00 AM. Courses held at 8:00 AM are generally avoided for a number of reasons, including but not limited to:

-The recommended amount of sleep for a young adult is between 8.5 and 9.5 hours; with an 8:00 AM course and a minimum preparation/transit time of 30 minutes, the implied sleep period begins somewhere between 10:00 PM and 11:00 PM. This does not correspond with the average college students daily sleep pattern and may result in reduced time available for homework completion, difficulty sleeping and daytime fatigue;

-If not the vast majority of college students then at least we, the undersigned, have greater difficulty concentrating and maintaining alertness and willingness to learn new material at earlier hours of the morning.

Furthermore, BMEN 260 is an extremely important course, especially considering its place as a prerequisite for courses such as BMEN 303/313: Anatomy & Physiology I and Lab and BMEN 306/316: Quantitative Physiology & Lab. Thus it becomes even more crucial that students are at the peak of their mental capability at the hour during which this course is lectured. Being a prerequisite to a series of junior BME courses, BMEN 260 is essentially mandatory for BME students matriculating in their 4th semester and cannot be postponed for sake of scheduling convenience.
One may also note that of the other recommended 4th-semester BME courses (MATH 224, BMEN 273, and ENGR 243), no sections are offered at the hours of 9:30-10:45 on Tuesday and Thursday, the slot directly contiguous with and consequent to BMEN 260s only offered time. Therefore, all 4th-semester BME students are left with a large scheduling gap after the 8:00 AM course that they may or may not be able to fill with an elective. This furthers the inconvenience of an 8:00 AM section of BMEN 260.
We, the undersigned, feel that a mandatory 8:00 AM class is both unhealthy and inconvenient. We feel that a different and/or additional offering of BMEN 260, especially considering most 4th-semester BME students availability at 9:30 AM on Tuesdays and Thursdays, would be preferable for scheduling and optimal for the students learning capacities that will eventually yield a generation of biomedical innovation.
