In Support of University Without Walls: An Honors Forum Student Initiative sign now

We, the undersigned members and supporters of the Skidmore College Honors Forum (HF), offer our support for the University Without Walls (UWW) program. Our support is predicated on the mission of HF as stated on our website: "The central goal of the Honors Forum is to strengthen the intellectual community for all highly motivated Skidmore students...The 'Forum,'...is intended...as a structure for organizing and promoting our common interests as an academic community." Please note that this petition is the project of certain concerned students (including certain members of HF), and is in no way sponsored by the HF Program itself. It represents the opinion of the undersigned people only, which is partially based on our interpretation of the HF mission. All communication with regard to this survey should be directed at the undersigned and not at the HF Director, the HF secretary, or HF faculty.

We believe that UWW considerably adds to the intellectual quality of the College. As we are charged with promoting the academic interests of the Skidmore community, we protest the recommendation to close UWW on the following grounds:

In on-campus courses, UWW students offer mature, adult perspectives from which residential students benefit. Often, UWW students enhance the level and quality of class discussions by virtue of their greater life experience. Furthermore, adult students act as models for lifelong learning for younger, residential students. This supports the college's policy to treat its residential students as "emerging adults." In addition, this intergenerational dialogue sets Skidmore apart from our peer institutions.
UWW students produce exceptional work of high caliber. Their presentations at Academic Festival and the UWW Academic Showcase have demonstrated this. Moreover, UWW students consistently produce work that has a direct impact outside the academic sphere; UWW students often directly implement their scholarly work at other institutions and organizations--through developing new curricula or publishing books, for example. As adults with experience in the workforce, they are in a good position to apply their academic work quickly. This reflects Lucy Scribner's mission of cultivating both "mind and hand."
UWW supports goal two of the strategic plan. Students from around the country and around the world interact in online educational spaces, promoting intercultural awareness and global understanding. The international scope of UWW contributes to the diversity of the college community. The sizeable Antigua program is noteworthy in this area, especially the exchange programs involving both residential students and Antigua students. We believe that Skidmore should be striving for this sort of global impact.
UWW's online courses are unique and exemplary in the field of distance education. Each course is individually structured and designed according to the course's content and the professor's pedagogy. The courses use current audiovisual technologies, weblogs, and discussion space software. UWW's excellence in online learning adds to Skidmore's prestige and academic excellence in general.

For these reasons, we see that UWW enhances the quality of Skidmore's intellectual community. Moreover, we believe that UWW students add to Skidmore's reputation, thus enhancing the value of the degree for all students. As members and supporters of the Honors Forum, we urge the college administration to continue the University Without Walls program.

If not for programs like UWW my own father never would have been able to earn a college degree. Programs like UWW are vital to the entire community.

I worked at UWW during the summer of 2007. I think that it is a great program that has touched the lives of many adults and Skidmore students alike. The program is rigorous and intellectually stimulating. The students who earn their degree through UWW giv
