In Defense of Regaining Perspolise Elamite Tablets Loaned to Chicago University sign now

General Secretary of UN

Mr. Kofi Annan

As you are aware, in 1935 some 30,000 historical tablets belonging to the Elamite period were discovered during excavation works being done on the site of the Persepolis in Iran.

Upon the request of the officials of the Oriental Institute of Chicago University, the Iranian government agreed at the time to loan the tablets to the university for studies, translation and research purposes to be subsequently returned to Iran.

Unfortunately after some 70 years, the loaned artifacts have still not been returned to Iran and periodic requests by Iranian government officials have been unheeded and totally ignored.

It has recently been announced that a court in the USA has passed a judgment against Iran stipulating that the artifacts in possession of the University of Chicago as a loan from Iran, should be sold and the proceeds be given to the families of the victims of a bomb blast in Ben Yehuda mall in 1997.

Irrespective of the fact that the Iranian involvement in this incident has always been hearsay and not officially approved, the ruling of the American court contravenes all laws and regulations regarding justice and has been passed purely for research and academic purposes and their ownership is irrefutably belongs to the Iranian people.

You know every person and nation in the world is committed to preserve and safeguard its cultural heritage; something thats not belong to governments or seen as a commercial property. So it is totally unacceptable to put under auction the national identity of a nation.

We have informed the officials at UNESCO with full background of the case and they have already taken appropriate steps in order to facilitate the return of these historical artifacts back to Iran.

An NGO has been formed to follow up this matter and other similar cases involving other artifacts which are wrongly in possession of various institutions throughout the world.

We hereby ask for your kind support in our endeavors towards regaining items of our cultural heritage and to do every thing in your power to protect the tablets of Iranian people.

Defense Committee of Cultural-Historical Properties of Iran (NGO)
