Improve the Response of the American Government to the Victims of Hurricane Katrina sign now

We, upstanding, tax-paying citizens of the United States of America, hereby make it known that we are not at all satisfied with the current level of aid and attention being paid to the areas of the American South recently devistated by Hurricane Katrina.

People are dying in our very own homeland because of our government's collective and historic negligence. Babies and the elderly are dropping dead where they lay. Bodies are strewing the sidewalks and mourners are stumbling through the streets, dazed and bewildered, insane with grief. Pregnant women are aborting every day because of the stressing physical and emotional conditions. Residents are STILL--STILL--after five days, STILL stranded on the rooftops of their homes in lakes that were once neighborhoods, stuck with no water, no food, no shade from the relentless sun, and no sign that help will ever come. People are being forced to scavange and steal their next bit of food and drop of water, and our media lambastes them for it, branding them looters, criminals, thieves. We blame them for the lawlessness and increasing crime while the very soldiers that should be patrolling these areas and keeping them safe are currently overseas for a reason no more pressing than this one per instruction of our federal government.

People are essentially dying because they are poor, because many of them are black, and because they are living in the American South. If Katrina had attacked Beverly Hills instead of Louisiana, every last displaced citizen would have been airlifted to the nearest Hilton within a day or so. If Katrina had attacked New York City instead of Mississippi, steps to send help would have been taken the very next day--in neglecting the victims of this tragedy, our government is punishing them for being poor, for being black, for living in the South. This is unfair and unacceptable, and we are stating loudly and publically that we will not stand for this inhumane disregard for our neighbors.

There is NOTHING more imporant in or to this country right now than the scores of people crying out for help and not receiving it. We cannot afford to let our federal government continue to stall, to refuse aid from other countries, to attempt to appease the nation with official press conferences and footage of the President giving empty speeches and posing for photo ops. This is an embarrassment of the highest callibre. This tragedy did not happen overseas in some other country--this happened in our very own backyard. There is no valid reason whatsoever that reaching out and administering aid should take this long.

As such, we, upstanding, tax-paying citizens of the United States of America, hereby implore our government to step up and do what it is supposed to do, to listen to the cries and needs of its citizens, no matter where they are from, no matter how much money is in their bank accounts, no matter the color of their skin. We call upon this government to treat this tragedy the way they treated 9/11. We demand that the devistated American South be given the same attention that is currently being given to Iraq. We charge this government to do its job and represent us the right way; we are not pleased, we will not tolerate, and changes must be made. STOP NEGLECTING THEM. It is that very attitude that set the stage for so tremendous a tragedy in the first place. We demand that our government take care of home and treat this situation with the urgency and priority it deserves.

Do more. Do better. Do it now.

This is a very sad situation and the support provided by the Federal Government, not the people, is even sadder!

From Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine. NSU students support the needs of victims such that future responses are much more efficient.
