Petition against Ram Gopal Vermas RANN

Cause : Improper depiction of the Indian National Anthem

Sitting back and enjoying our evening tea, we happened to notice an interesting interview on TV, that of renowned Indian film director Ram Gopal Verma, speaking about his latest hindi flick Rann, a film on media and journalism, & the link between the ethical and commercial parts governing the news channels. Seemingly an interesting storyline, just like all other RGV films, but it had us very dissappointed and unhappy to see the light in which the national anthem of our beloved country had been depicted.

The song Jana-gana-mana, composed originally in Bengali by Rabindranath Tagore, was adopted in its Hindi version by the Constituent Assembly as the national anthem of India on 24 January 1950. It was first sung on 27 December 1911 at the Calcutta Session of the Indian National Congress.

The Indian film producer and director Ram Gopal Varma has twisted the national anthem which is disrespectful; and apart from being disrespectful, it is totally against our constitution to amend the national anthem in any way, whatsoever. He has changed it from "Jana gana mana" to now "jana gana mana rann hai" and the rest of it being:

"Jana gana mana Rann hai,
is rann mein zakhmi bharat ka bhaagya vidhaata,
Punjab, Sindh, Gujarat, Maratha...
ek doosre se ladh ke mar rahe he,
Is desh ne humko ek kiya, aur hum desh ke tukde kar rahe,
Dravida utkala vanga,
khoon baha ke ek rang ka,
kar diya hum ne tiranga,
sarhadon pe jung aur galiyon mein phasa tiranga,
Vindya, himachal, yamuna, ganga mein tezhaab ubal raha he,
mar gaya sabka zamir, jane kab zinda ho aage,
phir bhi tava shaba name jage, tava shab aashisha mage,
Aag se jalkar cheek raha hai, phir bhi koi nahi bachata,
Gaye tava jai gaatha,
desh ka aisa haal hain lekin aapas me ladh rahe neta,
jana gana mangala dayaka jaya he, bharat ko bacha le vidhata,
jaya he, ya yeh maran hain,
jana gana mana rann hai".

"I have not tinkered with the national anthem. Tinkering would be if I would have shown it in bad light. I haven't done anything of this sort. Through this song, we are talking about the disputes in the country but there were no intentions to ridicule anything," RGV tells reporters yesterday, at a press conference in the capital where the first look of Rann was unveiled.

We agree with RGV and his intentions about the song, but the point we are trying to make is that no one in the country, whomsoever it might be, and at whatever position he/she might hold, has the right to sing the national anthem in any other way than it has been written. (Any modification to the national anthem is completely immoral, illegal, and criminal). While the intentions of the filmmakers arent wrong, the actions are seemingly otherwise.

A national anthem is a patriotic musical symphony that praises and lauds the history, traditions and efforts of its people. It is a song that keeps the whole nation untied, irrespective of language, religion, caste, creed, sex or color; a song that represents a nation as a whole.

The Indian National Constitution has given all of us citizens many rights which we enjoy in our lives today. Similarly, Article IV A, serial 51A, of the Constitution clearly states our fundamental duties, as citizens of the worlds largest democracy; It shall be the duty of every citizen of India to abide by the Constitution and respect its
ideals and institutions, the National Flag and the National Anthem;.

Another point we would like to raise is the website created to promote the film, http://www.janaganarann.com/; the name itself is a tainted image of our national anthem. Further on, it goes to say
The Indian National Anthem was first sung on December 27, 1911.

It was sung to welcome King George V on his visit to India.

There was a petition to replace the word Sindh, in the Indian National Anthem, with Kashmir. The Supreme Court denied it as Sindh refers to the great Indus civilization, which is an integral part of Indian Cultural Heritage.

Is it time for a change?

Please note the way in which old begotten issues have been depicted in order to simply create hype around the flick for purely commercial gains. Is it time for a change, it asks!! But, change to what exactly?? Does it mean a change to our national anthem?? (Please note, history is witness that the national anthem had been sung to welcome King George V on his visit to India, but had not been written in his praise, as is being cleverly depicted above)

In times when prominent personalities and eminent leaders of our country are joining hands and creating a platform for us the youth of the nation to stand up for our motherland, it is our duty to take an active part and participate in national issues, to voice our opinions and create a new meaning of democracy; to live in a better world, to become a super power. It is clearly the youth who can change, and there are platforms for us to do the same. For instance, the Jaago Re! campaign launched by Janaagraha Centre for Citizenship and Democracy & Tata Tea, to awaken the citizens of India, especially the youth.

Similarly, we have to join together and stand united to prevent such misuse and improper depiction of our national anthem. Hence, we humbly request all of you out there to join us and condemn this song created for RGVs Rann.

Hoping the authorities concerned, the government and the entire team of Rann will take immediate notice of this insult to our national anthem; the opinion of all of us Indians, and will make every necessary change to the film, in light of their fundamental duties, and will immediately stop the improper portrayal of Jana-gana-mana.

Thank you for your support,

Jaago Re,

Jai Ho!!
