Help Us (the People) Put Impeachment Back on the Table sign now

BACKGROUND:

When, in late 2006, Speaker of the U. S. House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi arbitrarily declared the prospect for impeaching Pres. Bush and Vice Pres. Cheney to be "off the table," she not only slammed shut the then-widening door of accountability for these two men's official malfeasance/misfeasance; she also denied the People their time-honored role in initiating and nurturing the impeachment process.

But since that time, and despite Pelosi's proclamation, the People have been regrouping, re-energizing, and reaffirming their commitment to the constitutional principle that no U. S. official may elevate him-/herself above the rule of law. We see this welcome political renaissance all across the nation -- in the public square with pro-impeachment demonstrations and in various state legislatures and local governing bodies where pro-impeachment resolutions have been introduced.

We've come to realize that the Pelosi-spawned inertia of an unabashedly see-no-evil/hear-no-evil Congress remains a difficult target for reversal; but we also know that we have no choice but to press on with this critical task of, and for, the People.

Our signatures on this petition serve notice to all members of Congress that our unified voice, complemented by the yet-to-be registered vox populi of millions from around the world, must be heard and favorably acted upon by our elected representatives. Should most of our governmental leaders choose to turn a deaf ear to us, then they might consider preparing themselves for the justice awaiting them.

TEXT OF PETITION:

WHEREAS, on April 24, 2007, U. S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D.-OH) introduced House Resolution 333, calling for the impeachment of Vice Pres. Richard B. Cheney (see http://www.kucinich.house.gov );

WHEREAS, Rep. Tom Davis (R.-VA) of the 11th Congressional District of Virginia serves as the ranking member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, and therefore would serve as an ideal co-sponsor of H. R. 333;

WHEREAS, Mr. Davis recently declared to several members of Virginians for Peace and Accountability ( http://www.peaceandaccountability.com ) that "I'll keep an open mind" on the prospect for impeachment while at the same time partially closing his eyes and ears to Bush-Cheney's overdue impeachability;

WHEREAS, in that same May 7, 2007, meeting with the Virginia peace activists, Mr. Davis said, "I would never base impeachment on popular opinion" (thus shortsightedly confusing the governmental will of the people with any given presidential-popularity opinion poll); and

WHEREAS, this petition puts on the public record Mr. Davis's current stance on B-C impeachability -- and hence challenges him to periodically and objectively review that stance with his constituents --

WE, the undersigned People, hereby petition Mr. Davis to promptly add his name to the list of sponsors of H. R. 333 and to support the growing Bush-Cheney impeachment movement in all other appropriate ways.
