Help Expand Long's Park: Lancaster, PA sign now

CALL TO ACTION:
HELP PRESERVE LANCASTER COUNTY GREENSPACE!
INCORPORATE THE DEISLEY FARM INTO LONG'S PARK.

We are trying to get the word out about incorporating the Deisley farm into Longs Park rather than building another shopping mall increasing congestion on Harrisburg Pike and the Rte. 30 interchange. Longs Park is approximately seventy acres and was recently given four acres on the south edge along the stream by R.R. Donnelley and Sons Company. The park is locked in by Rte. 30, the railroad, Donnelley and Harrisburg Pike.

We understand that High Industries has an option to purchase the property if it has not already.

We opposed changing the zoning from industrial to commercial at several Manheim Twp. Commissioners Meetings requesting that the property be utilized as park space. The commissioners stated We have sufficient park space in Manheim Township, and a shopping center would add to our tax base without adding students to our schools. The commissioners passed a complex text-amendment allowing High to proceed if they can secure funding for upgrades to the Rte. 30/Harrisburg Pike Interchange, improve Harrisburg Pike up to Dillersville Rd., and expand Harrisburg Pike to four lanes at the railroad underpass. Note: Mayor Rick Gray was in attendance at the meeting when the text amendment was passed; he was the only public official there adamantly opposed to Highs proposed shopping center!

Franklin and Marshall College currently uses the stream on the Deisley Farm for environmental studies for their students. I understand they have a tentative agreement with High to continue to do so.

The Deisley Farm was the site of an Indian Settlement, but public officials claim, Its already been destroyed and there are no remaining artifacts. If you have any of these artifacts or know of someone who does, would you please contact us at [email protected]

February 20th, 2007 Ed McMahon, land-use planner, senior resident fellow at the Urban Land Institute in Washington, D.C. was keynote speaker at Lancaster County Planning Commissions kickoff for the development of a green infrastructure plan. He stated, When people are offered the opportunity to vote on a Bond to Save Open Space, the Bond passes! He went on to say, Conservation of green space within cities greatly enhances their culture, attractiveness, and the property values of businesses as well as homes.

We strongly believe in the expansion of Longs Park as a wonderful green space and complement to the City of Lancaster and Lancaster County. I urge you, contact your friends, family, co-workers, and neighbors about this valuable GREEN SPACE.
