HELP END THE DOCTOR SHORTAGE AND PATIENT SUFFERING ON WAITING LISTS IN ONTARIO sign now

"We, the undersigned, respectfully ask Honourable Deb Matthews, the current Ontario Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, to start solving the unnecessarily long patient wait lists and doctor shortages by immediately issuing transitional licenses to all Qualified Immigrant Medical Doctors who have already resided in Ontario. This will allow them to work under supervision while they become up-to-date and eventually work independently.
There are more than 7500 Immigrant Medical Doctors in Ontario, more than 2000 of them passed all Canadian Medical Exams and received LMCC, Licentiate of Medical Council of Canada, passed Ontario Clinical Assessment Exams, English Language Exams, had many interviews, etc. The college of Physician and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO), without convincing clear reasons or explanations, and in defiance of the law, is unfairly denying licenses to highly qualified immigrant medical doctors.
According to a recent study by the Ontario College of Family Physicians, almost a million people in Ontario do not have a family doctor. About 500,000 are actively looking but can't find one. 90 per cent agree there is a shortage. This is an eight per cent increase since September 2003.In 2008, 72 per cent or more than 6 million Ontarians believe the shortage is very serious.
Many Ontarians who do not have a family doctor, choose to wait long hours in hospital emergency rooms or walk-in clinics and wait much longer to see a specialist. According to the government's own recent statistics, 9 out of 10 patients waited an average of 11 hours in an emergency room."

Emergency departments are busy because Ontarians don't have access to family doctors and many frail, elderly people aren't getting what they need from family doctors.
Long waiting times affect everyone.
