Health Care for All Penn Workers sign now

We the undersigned believe that the University of Pennsylvania should ensure that all people who work at the University and their dependents have affordable, high quality health care.

Only employees on the University payroll are eligible for the Universitys employee health care plans. However, those who work at the University of Pennsylvania include not only full-time and part-time employees on the University payroll, but also graduate research and teaching assistants, temporary employees, and employees of firms which hold contracts with the University.
Part-time employees pay higher premiums for their health care than full-time employees do. A full-time employee of the University in 2005-2006 will spend at least $820 per year on health care for one dependent and themselves. A part-time employee with one dependent, however, will pay a minimum premium of $8097; a graduate employee with one dependent pays $5166. A health care plan is affordable only if the money spent in premiums and out-of-pocket costs represents a reasonable percentage of an employees income.
Even the most expensive health care plan offered by the University does not include dental and vision care in the basic premium. A quality health care plan must include dental and vision care.

By failing to ensure that all those who work at Penn and their dependents have access to affordable, high quality heath care, the University forces workers to go without necessary health services or turn to publicly funded programs. That workers must resort to this is not acceptable at an institution as wealthy and prestigious as the University of Pennsylvania, especially one that has non-profit status. We call on the University to reform its policies on this issue now.
