Hard Drives Should Meet Rated Capacity sign now

Seagate Technology,

We, the customer, have grown weary. We're tired of hard drive manufacturers rating capacity in decimal instead of binary. It's false advertising, and the difference is getting bigger all the time.

You've led the hard drive industry in the right direction before. Remember when you set the industry standard warranty at 5 years? We appreciate that. Now, let's do it again.

We are asking two things:

1) Rate capacity in binary, instead of decimal. We want to take a hard drive home and format it to rated capacity. We're all tired of taking home a rated 320GB drive, and having it format to 298GB. This margin of error is simply unacceptable.

2) Put yourself at the front of the market in quality. Set a maximum allowable margin of error, out of the box, to 0.5\%. When I buy a 320GB drive, it should format to no less than 328.4GB.

All it would take is one manufacturer to step up and do it, and advertise the hell out of the fact that YOUR drives give their FULL rated capacity when formatted. Everyone else will have to follow suit to be able to compete. This step forward in truthful marketing will do a lot more for you, and for us, than any gimmick.
