HAMMONDS PLAINS ROAD SAFETY CONCERNS sign now

Several Hammonds Plains residents and those who travel along Hammonds Plains Road have several major concerns. They are as follows and this petition asks that they be addressed.

1) STREETLIGHTING NEEDED ALONG HAMMONDS PLAINS ROAD BETWEEN YANKEETOWN AND ROCKCLIFFE. There is insufficient streetlighting along this stretch of road. People standing at bus stops and crossing the road are in danger as they cannot be seen very well in the dark. Oftentimes this road is shrouded in thick fog making it even more difficult to see. Even when the weather is clear people feel as though they are 'driving into a black void' when traffic is oncoming. This road is particularly narrow, very busy and the speed limit is too fast for a residential area and there should be streetlighting.
2) SPEED LIMIT TO BE REDUCED TO 70KM ALONG THE WHOLE LENGTH OF HAMMONDS PLAINS ROAD BETWEEN POCKWOCK AND WESTWOOD HILLS. The volume of traffic since its 1971 designation as a controlled access highway has increased exponentially. 90km is too fast in a busy road with a large section without any street lights whatsoever. Vehicles travelling in excess of 90km within only a few feet of pedestrians waiting for buses is an extremely dangerous situation and is a major concern. Many cyclists feel that they cannot use this road because the section which has 80-90km speed limit is too dangerous. The speed MUST be reduced. (Incidentally, the only other roadway in the whole of HRM with a 90km speed limit is the Magazine Hill, which is a four lane divided highway which is NOT running through a major residential area.)
3) TRAFFIC LIGHTS NEEDED AT NORTHWOOD AND HAMMONDS PLAINS ROAD CROSSROADS. Due to the additional subdivisions and expansion of existing ones in this area, the volume of traffic has increased dramatically, making it more difficult and dangerous to enter and exit Hammonds Plains Road onto Northwood, particularly at peak times. There has been an increase in accidents at this crossroads and there should be traffic controls for bus travellers, children and adults to cross safely from one side of the subdivision to the other. With the addition of the new bike park in the newer part of Highland Park there is a more urgent need of traffic controls to enable safe crossing from the other side of the subdivision.
