Green-Wood Pesticide sign now
We are writing as friends and supporters of Green-Wood to express our concerns about herbicides used in the cemetery. We appreciate that Green-Wood must maintain its appearance in a manner that is effective and cost-efficient. However, we worry that clients, neighbors and visitors are being exposed to harmful chemicals. In fact, two of the three herbicides used in Green-Wood have been banned on New York City property (such as Prospect Park) because of health concerns.
Fortunately, our research indicates that many options exist for reducing the chance that the public is exposed to harmful chemicals, while at the same time preserving Green-Woods appearance and enhancing its stature and reputation. These range from simple steps such as increasing signage and limiting spraying to a single area at a time to using organic alternatives. Similar institutions, such as Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Boston, do not use chemical herbicides. This has brought them significant positive press, including from the Boston Globe.
We would similarly like to promote Green-Wood as a leader and responsible neighbor to our families, friends, political leaders and the media. We respect the challenges you face in balancing the priorities of an important institution like Green-Wood. Thus, we do not have a set of demands or dictates. We would merely like to open a dialogue with you on these issues. We look forward to your response within two weeks from the date of this letter.
