Get Caroline to Voyageur 2007! sign now

To Whom It May Concern At The AYF:
We have recently been told that a friend of ours, Caroline McCarthy, will not be allowed to attend Voyageur at Camp Miniwanca this summer due to her peanut allergy. Caroline has been attending Camp Miniwanca for 5 summers, and Miniwanca has captivated her with its magic, just like it has with all of us. We, the future Voyageur girls, were angry to hear that our friend wouldn't be allowed to return because of her allergy, which can be considered a disability. We understand that there could be issues with her allergy, seeing as peanut butter has been eaten on trail in past years and there may be some residue of it in the tents. We are also aware that the Georgian Bay is in a very remote area, but hopefully, if we take the proper precautions, this will not be an issue. As for the complications with the tents, tents can be wiped down. If Caroline has no problems with eating lunch every day at tables that have only been wiped down and may have had peanut butter on them, then we fail to see how this would be any different. If it's a big deal, we will willingly assist in wiping down the tents. We are also aware that peanut butter is a huge part of the diet on trail, but these can easily be replaced with soy nut butter, or tree nut butter. Both of these substitutions have the same amount of protein, and soy nut butter is healthier. Caroline's parents would be willing to cover the cost of soy nut butter if it is more expensive than your budget allows. On your website, you state, "We work together to create a community where individuals are respected, and where our values guide our actions." We know from past years that you are always trying to make camp fit to the individual, so that it can be a 'home away from home'. We hope that you will take our suggestions into consideration and work together with us to create a community where Caroline can be respected and accepted, despite her health issue. We sincerely hope that this summer will work out for all of us so that we can continue to be our own selves, at our very best, all the time.
