FreeCycle.org Tax Exempt Status sign now

Petition for the Approval of Tax Exempt Status 501(3)for Freecycle.org

The Freecycle Network is applying for tax exempt status as a charity for not for profit entity. Based on the old adage that "one person's trash is another person's treasure", Freecycle.org is reducing the flow of trash into landfills by connecting people who want to get rid of unwanted possessions with others looking for free household goods, toys and even vehicles. The nonprofit organization has kept 55 tons of waste a day out of landfills worldwide.

Anyone looking to give away or acquire an item can join a local web site, where all items listed are free. The organization does not spend money or resources to pick up or store. It goes directly to the needy individual. One gets to see the person they are helping. It is the truest charity I have ever given to. Some people do donate an items or items valued in excess of 250.00. In Richmond this lady gave away 2 dryers, a washer, a range for free to others for free. So shouldn't it be tax deductible? I was offered 30 computer monitors that have been sitting in a woman's patio under a plastic cover. I know a gentlemen that is fixing old computers to make a library for children in a church. It was simply hooking up those monitors with those kids in the church. No organization that I know of comes close or near as expedient and facilitating as this transaction was. These people do it all with no tax incentives at all.

As a member I can tell you that the concept is brilliant and it gives us a sense of community. We should be recognized for the untold part we play in preserving our environment, minimizing costs for government and keeping it simple and corruption free. When corporations and government recycle it costs us money. Even when charities give to the needy the gifts or donations seldom end up completely with the needy. At Freecycle it doesn't cost anyone anything. It is no wonder the concept is foreign. We take direct action without corporation fraud, profit, government controls and bureaucracy. In the end the citizens end up paying for "their way".

Freecycle.org is unlike anything the IRS has ever seen before. They believe in what we are doing, but we need to prove we are worthy. Although education is a very important part of what we do, we have to qualify for 501(c)3 status under another of their standards: "lessening the burdens of government" through the promotion and implementation of a reuse program on a massive grassroots scale across the United States. (Too bad all the efforts of groups from the rest of the world can't help us with the IRS. :~( And btw, the quoted part is from IRS tax code.)

Let them know how we feel about it by signing this petition and writing to them. IN THE NEXT TEN DAYS, SEND AN EMAIL ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF OUR

FREECYCLE GROUP TO REDUCING THE BURDEN ON GOVERNMENT. It'd be great if you'd write a little note email is fine that describes how you see The Freecycle

Network helping to lessen the burden on government. You can write about your town, county, state, and/or the whole USA! Short and sweet is fine, too. Please be sure to include your name and town, and send your email to [email protected] . We'll make sure it gets into the package our lawyer is planning to deliver to the IRS on July 18th. If you can get it to us before then, you are welcome to send a letter instead of email to: The Freecycle Network, P.O. Box 294, Tucson, AZ 85702

LET US KNOW IF YOU KNOW ANY ELECTED OFFICIALS. An "in" is always a big help! Write to your mayor, town supervisor, county executive, US

senators and congressperson, as well as the governor. If you can open any doors for us, please let us know.

I think its a fabulous concept. I don't like giving my things to Goodwill knowing that they are going to turn around and make a money on something that was given to them for free. I like being able to fill someone else's need with something that I don't n
