Former LFA students supporting Lisa Reimer sign now

Recently, we have been made aware of the current conflict between Little Flower Academy and Ms. Lisa Reimer. As former students, we would like to express grave concern over the perceived violation of Ms. Reimers rights as a Canadian citizen and as a human being.

Although we respect and recognize the fact that Ms. Reimer did sign a contract prior to her employment, which committed her to upholding principles of Catholicism, we strongly urge you to reconsider your position.

We can all agree that not all tenets of the Catholic faith or Christianity are to be held up as shining examples of civil or just behaviour towards our fellow human beings. Certain parts of the Bible have been used to justify myriad atrocities, such as slavery, racism and institutionalized sexism.

We believe Little Flower Academy is a valuable and important part of its past students lives, and the lives of its current students. It provided an environment for us to discover interests and to not only pursue passions, but also to determine where those passions lie. At LFA, we made friends and met peers that to this day, continue to amaze us with their incredible intelligence and personal integrity. Our teachers made a lasting impression, teaching us the importance of discipline, hard work and most importantly, critical thinking.

We know now that the Church and the Bible were both wrong about slavery, racism, and the inferiority of women. When Galileo suggested that Earth was not the centre of the universe, he was labeled as a heretic. And yet, the Church has been able to overcome its intellectual and cultural stagnation and has become cognizant of its capacity for mistakes and misjudgment. We strongly believe that the Church is also wrong in its doctrine regarding homosexuality.

In religion classes we were taught that love, above all else was Jesus new commandment to his disciples.

"A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another." (John 13:34-35)

We urge you to reconsider your position on this issue, and to use reason rather than ignorance to determine the manner in which Ms. Reimers situation will be addressed. We hope you will act with tolerance, rather than bigotry; with rationality rather than passion, and most of all, with love rather than hatred.
