Father Charles E. McCallister Distinguished District Governor Award sign now

Last fall, Key Club International lost one of the greatest men who has ever served the Kiwanis Family. Father Charles McCallister, affectionately known as Father Chuck by all those who knew him, passed away on October 13th, 2007 in his home.

Father Chucks service in the Kiwanis Family began during his time in high school where he was a member of the Elkins High School Key Club. During his adult life, Father Chuck served in various capacities in both Key Club and Kiwanis. During his time in Kiwanis, he served in many positions including President of the Wheeling Kiwanis Club, Lieutenant Governor, and even served as Governor of the West Virginia District of Kiwanis International. Perhaps most notable was Father Chucks service as Administrator of the West Virginia District of Key Club International. The West Virginia Key Club District Convention of 2007 marked Father Chucks 35th year as Administrator. During these many years, he served as both Vice-President and President of the Administrators Association. Father Chuck was the founding President of the West Virginia Kiwanis Foundation. Kiwanis International recognized him as a George Hixson Fellow and he was twice awarded the Tablet of Honor by Kiwanis International. In 1977, he received the Key of Honor from Key Club International, the highest award for service to youth.

Father Chuck regularly held mass at the Key Club District and International Conventions, as well as at various district and international functions. Anyone who knew him would say that he was a very giving man, and would go out of his way to help any one who was in need. Father Chuck always stressed the importance of good leadership, at the club, district and international levels. He was especially adamant about the effect the District Governor could have on the district board and the entire district. He claimed that the Governor could set the tone and either inspire or discourage the district board. In order to help build this leadership at the district level, Father Chuck helped create the Governors Retreat in the South (GRITS). Father Chuck devoted his life to the service of others both in occupation and his involvement with the Kiwanis Family.

We, the undersigned, support the naming of the Distinguished District Governor Award after Father Chuck, changing it to the Father Charles E. McCallister Distinguished District Governor Award.
