Farewell Dulary sign now

Dear Dulary,

On October 5, 2006, the Philadelphia Zoo announced it would be closing its elephant exhibit and sending you to The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee.

Petal, Kallie, and Bette - the African elephants who shared your 1,800 square foot barn - will not be joining you, but instead are being sent to another zoo in Baltimore, Maryland, where Kallie and Bette will be artifically inseminated in an attempt to breed more elephants to live in captivity.

Dulary, you were taken from your family in the wilds of Asia over 40 years ago and shipped to the United States to be put on display in the same enclosure, sharing the small space with one or more elephants.

You have lived in isolation since August 2005, when Bette gored you near your eye - a direct consequence of the zoo's cramming of four elephants into a quarter-acre yard. You were confined a minimum of 20 hours a day inside the dank, cement barn, often in chains. You haven't felt grass beneath your feet since you were a young baby, or seen the night sky.

No living being should have been required to suffer through what you have, and we are so sorry. But all this is going to change very soon!

In early March 2007, the Philadelphia Zoo announced that you will be leaving for The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee in late March or early April - just a matter of a few weeks! We have checked out your new home at www.elephants.com and we know you will love it! You will have at least eight other Asian elephants to play with, and access to over 2,200 acres of rolling hills, lakes, and ponds. We plan to watch you someday on the Santuary's live "elecam" enjoying everything the Sanctuary has to offer.

Most of all, Dulary, we love you and because we love you, we want the best for you and that means saying Good-Bye!

May your new life be better than what you had. Zoo's are no place for an elephant that began her life in the wild. How sad she must be, and we should be ashamed.God bless your soul Dulary and may your struggle teach us a better way to be to all living thi
