Extension of Civil Rights to Homosexuals sign now

It is with unending sorrow that one looks from the federal constitution and the declaration of independence to the current state of civil rights in NJ. A whole section of the population is being discriminated against based on their choices of love and sexual orientation. In this modern age, where freedom is the battle cry of countless countries abroad, we cannot find many basic freedoms in our own country. The first amendment prevents the state from establishing a religion and allowing religious practice to effect civic life. How then can homosexuals be prevented from achieving full marriage rights. The 14th amendment provides for equal protection under the law. While it does not specifically say "sexual orientation" the purpose was very clear; it was created to protect all American citizens equally. Allowing such prejudice to continue holds back democracy, reform, progress, and the will of many people in this country. Minorities are supposed to be protected, not kept as secondary citizens. Civil unions are just a way of preventing homosexuals from achieving full rights. It is about time that our state moves beyond prejudice and actually commits to the very principles that are taught in its schools.

In the words of Frederick Douglass:

Let me give you a word of the philosophy of reforms. The whole history o the progress of human liberty shows that all concessions yet made to her august claims have been born of struggle.....If there is no struggle, there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom and yet deprecate agitation are men who want crops without plowing up the ground. They want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters. The struggle may be a moral one; or it may be a physical one; or it may be both moral and physical, but it must be a struggle. Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will.

To achieve the action that is so rightfully and constitutionally promised, we urge the New Jersey Assembly to amend the constitution to allow for gay marriage with full rights.
