Equal Access To Federal Post-Secondary Funding For All Dalhousie Students sign now

The Nova Scotia Department of Education, lead by Minister Karen Casey, have decided to prevent 52\% of Dalhousie students from receiving the benefits of $19.1 million in federal post-secondary education funding. Approximately 8000 students at Dalhousie will not receive reductions in their Winter 2007 and Fall 2007 tuition fees. The significance of this issue is that the other 48\% of the student body will.

The government has decided that by providing the federal funding only to Nova Scotian born students, it is increasing post-secondary education access for Nova Scotians. Indeed it may be. However, it is also discriminating against 8000 Dalhousie students who pay the same tuition, take the same courses, pay the same taxes, work in the same economy and rent in the same market as native Nova Scotian students.

Ultimately, the 8000 out-of-province students at Dalhousie are being prevented from accessing federal money, ear-marked for each and every post-secondary student in Canada. In a bout of irony, these same out-of-province students will not be eligible for this funding from their home provinces because of their out-of-province status (i.e. they are Dalhousie students not, Simon Fraser, Carleton or University of Alberta Students, etc.). The Nova Scotian government has created, for these 8000 students, a loop-hole in which, despite being an equal student of Dalhousie University, they are treated differently, marginalized and prevented from accessing monies provided to assist them.

As a province of the federation of Canada, the Nova Scotian government is to embody the text of the Canadian Constitution in which each and every citizen of Canada is guaranteed to be treated equally and to be able to live free from discrimination. The current Nova Scotian government is not living up to this responsibility.

If you agree that the Nova Scotian Provincial Government and its Education Department headed by Karen Casey should make Federal funding available to all Dalhousie University students, then please sign this petition. This petition will be forwarded to Premier Rodney MacDonald, the provincial Education Department and to the Education Minister herself, Karen Casey.

Thank you for your support.
